Lot 353
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 16.90 g, 11 h), contemporary imitation, copying Arados. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, palm tree; below throne, monogram of AP; in exergue, Aramaic legend. Cf. Price B22-B23 (for similar copies of Aradian tetradrachms). Harshly cleaned and scratched, otherwise, very fine.

From a Swiss collection, formed before 2005.

The retrograde AP monogram below the throne and the unpublished Aramaic legend in the exergue, as well as the slightly degraded style, indicate this as being a copy of an Aradian tetradrachm in the name of Alexander the Great instead of being an official issue.
